Notes from meeting:

April Sullivan talked about VSA arts of Texas and their exhibits and calls for art, the website at www.vsatx.org, and classes and workshops.

Maria Teresa Aguirre talked about her art classes at VSA.

Daphne Holland talked about the Dougherty Arts School’s Adult Program in clay, jewelry, mosaic, photo, textiles, printmaking, yoga, and more. She asked for feedback from the participants on making the classes more accessible to artists with disabilities.

Janet Love asked about the accommodation of having non-fluorescent environments in the classrooms.

Cindy Massey mentioned that many artists are on SSDI or SSI income, do not have jobs, and the classes are out of their price range.

Daphne will look into grants to help subsidize the classes for those who can not afford them.

April suggested a payment plan option.

Daphne will also look into becoming a vendor for DARS for those who want to take classes for professional development.

Cindy suggested a need for a marketing workshop.

There is also a need for workshops on Digital Photography and Building Websites.

The artists went around and introduced themselves.

Cindy suggested Vistaprint.com for business cards.

Discussion on DARS paying for art equipment such as photography equipment.

Discussion on studio space. Suggestions: IDEA@BREAD FACTORY, Flatbed Press, AVAA, Imagine Art.

Introductions around the table.

Invited artists to an upcoming meeting on a Visitability ordinance for new homes to be built with more accessibility features.

Promoted upcoming workshop on Social Security Work Incentives and upcoming call for art for an exhibition in McAllen, TX and the Artability call for art in Pennsylvania.

An artist suggested VSA arts of Texas getting a booth at the Art City Austin festival in 2009 for VSA artists.

Reminded artists about the chance to put up a page on the VSA arts of Texas website.

Amy's on Sixth Street, River Place Country Club, Paradise Café on Sixth Street, and the new Real Gallery were suggested for showing artwork.

Artists were reminded that the Texas Biennial deadline was extended to June 30th.

The organization BIG Austin was suggested as a place to go for small business workshops.

Artists discussed where to find reasonably priced copies of Photoshop software.

One artist is looking for a patent attorney. Another agreed to share her notes from a workshop she attended on the subject.

SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) was suggested as a resource for an attorney.
