Notes from meeting:

April Sullivan and Vi Napolitano were interviewed by Laurie Johnson for KUHF, Houston’s NPR Station. The story, "Helping Disabled Artists Succeed," can be heard at the KUHF website. April discussed the point of the meeting and how it came about. Gave background information on VSA arts of Texas. Resources available for artists with disabilities including workshops, exhibitions, and calls for art can be found at the VSA arts of Texas website.

April also talked about resources for artists at the Texas Commission on the Arts website.

The artists introduced themselves and talked about the artwork they create and what they expect to gain from the Networking meetings. Mark Mauboules talked about the art classes held for artists with disabilities at the Art League of Houston. Information on the Outreach Classes can be found at the Art Leaugue Houston website. Mark also suggested a website where he displays his artwork: America's Art website.

Readie enjoys crafts and it was suggested that she look into the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

Artists talked about a need for technique oriented classes in drawing and painting.

Marta Martin talked about resources from the Houston Arts Alliance including an artist resource room for artists to use a computer and access resources. She also talked about the LINC Program. Specific outreach and grant opportunities for individual artists. For more information, visit the Houston Arts Alliance website.

A free publication that features local, non-professional poets. Information can be found at the San Antio Poet website. Art classes were also discussed and information on Art classes through the Parks and Recreation Dept. can be found at the San Antonio Parks & Recreation website. Information on classes at Coppini Academy of Fine Arts can be found at The Coppini Academy website. A Co-op gallery where all artists could show and sell their work was also discussed.

Introductions

Discussion about the low turnout at the meeting and possible solutions.

Sarah from the Art League has spoken to Heather about the use of the Art League space for meetings on Wednesday afternoons starting in October.

The art exhibit featuring artists from the Networking group scheduled in May in a local restaurant fell through due to a lack of contract from the restaurant.

The group is planning to create an Art Car for the May 2009 parade. Jon will donate the car and make sure it is street legal for the parade.

002 Magazine is a local magazine recommended as a good place to find out about new art galleries.

Discussion on setting up a newsletter or myspace site for the networking meetings.

Heather is interested in coordinating the artists from the group to create a group sculpture for the next Red Bull Art Contest.

Artists were reminded that they can create a page on the VSA website to show and sell artwork.
