Opening Minds, Opening Doors:
Promoting Self-Advocates as Speakers

This is VSA Texas’ new public speaker training project!

We are currently training self-advocates to speak and present at conferences and other events in Texas. Through our classes on narrative storytelling and presentation techniques, participants work to develop strong, creative voices and the skills needed to advocate for disability rights.

Our classes are currently full, but we are looking for general assistants to help in our classes, scribe or describe for participants when necessary, provide one-on-one coaching support for individual participants, and perform other duties as needed. If you are interested in serving as an assistant, please contact Eric Clow by email or call 512-454-9912 for an application.

Please visit the Opening Minds, Opening Doors webpage for more project updates.

Financial Support for Opening Minds, Opening Doors: Promoting Self-Advocates as Speakers is provided by the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities and made available by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

*$125,000 (75%) DD funds; $41,666 (25%) non-federal resources
