VSA Texas offers a number of fun and engaging volunteer opportunities. Whether you want to learn about working with people with disabilities, or simply like participating in art activities, we can help you find a volunteer position right for you.

Volunteers needed for Opening Minds, Opening Doors:
Promoting Self-Advocates as Speakers

What is Opening Minds, Opening Doors?
This program will combine the skills and techniques of storytelling and acting with public speaking skills so that self-advocates can bring their stories to the general public. Through speeches at statewide conferences, self-advocates will be able to show people that we are all more alike than different.

These Classes are on Saturdays from 1-4 at the AGE Building

New Media Arts Summer Camps Looking For Volunteers

June Camps

Camp 1
Explore Your Creativity! A Makers Workshop

Date: June 9 - June 12 & June 16 - June 19
Time: Monday – Thursday, 10 am – 2 pm
Instructor: Carol Stensrud Ed.D. CTRS

Do you like to make things? Our Makers Workshop will provide quick lessons on painting, printmaking, collage, comics & book making, bottle sculpture, wearable art and photography. Students will choose materials, share ideas and create their own projects. We will also explore popular culture - art & style, music, movies, fads & fashion - through discussion and a rocking field trip! No experience needed.

Camp 2
Animation!

Date: June 23 - June 26 & June 30 - July 3
Time: Monday - Thursday, 10 am - 2 pm
Instructors: Johnny Villarreal and Jerry Slayton
This camp is an internship and applications are required.
Successful applicants will receive a discounted camp fee.

Students will explore the animated image to learn the tricks behind movie illusions and more. Projects will include Zoetrope animation, Flip books, Hand-drawn animation, Cut-out animation, Stop Motion Animation, as well as digital effects such as Green screen and Live-action animation. Students will develop a video portfolio of projects, including an original Stop Motion Animated short.

July Camps

Camp 3
Comedy Club at VSA Texas!

Dates: July 7 - July 10 & July 14 - July 17
Time: Monday - Thursday, 10 am - 2 pm
Instructors: Heidi Caldwell and special guests

Laughter is the best medicine! Spend a couple weeks exploring various forms of performance comedy - Stand Up, Improvisation, Storytelling and more. Austin is ripe with comedy clubs and Improv theaters, platforms for poetry and storytelling. Learn with special guest workshops and improv troupe performances. No experience needed.

Camp 4
Radio VSA Texas

Date: July 21 - July 24 & July 28 - July 31
Time: Monday - Thursday, 10 am - 2 pm
Instructor: Eric Clow and special guests

Find out what it takes to be part of a radio team. Learn about the variety of departments - from news, public affairs and weather reporting, to music and the arts, talk shows, production and marketing. They all work together as a team to run a successful radio station. Join the team this July and help create a Radio VSA Texas pod cast of stories of interest to you! No experience needed.
